By design, Originate must build long term success for our partners in order to enjoy success itself.  But since there is no long term without the short term, both aspects are carefully planned.  Originate has created a variety of options to best fit the unique needs of each venture partner, each of which result in a successful transition out of the initial Originate Labs development incubation.

Originate Labs initially focuses on rapid product development to take an idea to a tangible product or prototype.  By leveraging elite engineering, development infrastructures, processes, experiences, and best practices, Originate is able to move quickly through the initial scope of work.  Finally, by leveraging Originate’s in-house IT operations, Originate is able to launch and support the final product in production.

At this stage, many ventures seek initial or additional funding to build in-house engineering and operations organizations.  Originate Resources was created and spun out by Originate Labs for this specific purpose: to help attract the same high caliber talent that Originate Labs employs.  Labs works closely with Resources to screen, interview, and, most importantly, attract the right talent for each partner.  Once hiring decisions are made, the Originate innovators work with new employees to train, transition, and support the previously developed intellectual property.  The result is a completely smooth transition of not only the technology and operations, but also the engineering processes, best practices, documentation and tools that the initial development team employed.  Like Originate Labs, Originate Resources also offers equity and cash/equity pricing to significantly reduce the placement costs.  Please see Originate Resources website for more information.

Alternatively, many Originate Labs partners choose to move to an outsourced model once the initial technology is developed and is operational.  Depending on the complexity of the technology, time-to-market requirements, capital, etc., this may require continued elite engineering consulting and operational support, or significantly less expensive outsourced / offshore resources. 

Some Originate Lab partners choose to move to a cash/equity or cash only model in order to continue to utilize the Originate Labs engineering and operations talent.  Although this is an expensive option, often the market opportunity and cash-flow justify such a convenience.  In this model, Originate Labs continues product innovation and development, as well as operational support of the products.  Alternatively, Originate Resources offers hourly contractors that are familiar with the Originate Labs development and operations processes.

For many ventures, particularly in the web space, IT support and operations become the primary focus after the initial prototype is developed and deployed.  Originate Labs employs a world class IT and operations team who are leveraged during the incubation of the initial technology.  Originate is currently incubating a remote managed IT service offering, Originate IT, that is available only to Originate’s current, past and beta partners.  This service will soon be fully launched as an independent service to provide small and medium size businesses with a less expensive alternative to supporting in-house IT.  Please see Originate IT for more information. 

Finally, for many ventures it makes sense to move to the least expensive, offshore development model.  In 2007, Originate Labs launched an office in Hangzhou, China focused on providing Venture Resources to Chinese entrepreneurs, as well as helping U.S. partners outsource ongoing development to work to China.  Originate Labs is able to provide the same smooth transition to an offshore team in China if the product is an appropriate fit.
